Scott Young chalked up his side's first win of his management career tonight with goals from Gary Hamilton and Richard Clarke.
It was a difficult game for Glentoran who never seemed to be able to make the match look as easy as they could have. Within 30 seconds from kick off Institute took a shock lead after JOhnny Black's header back to James Taylor was intercepted and tucked away easily by Ryan Semple.
The game had plenty of life left in it however as the Glens played the better football throughout. The first half saw missed opportunities by Hamilton and Gillespie but the Glens would equalise from the penalty spot.
Halliday was brought down near the edge of the box, at which point Hamilton, who had been Glentoran's best outlet prior stepped up to cheekily chip his spot kick right down the centre of the goal. Stute keeper Cullen opted for a more traditional penalty option diving low to his left as Hamilton celebrated his equaliser.
It was almost a repeat display at the other end when Sean Ward conceded a penalty kick but David Ogilby's strike was well saved by Taylor and cleared from danger.
On the call of half time an unclear exchange between Daryl Fordyce and Ruairi McClean resulted in them both being sent off. Referee Simon Creaney made his decision without any input from his assistants and produced the red.
The second half saw the introduction of Dean Fitzgerald from the bench and later Ciaran Martyn made a return in the centre of midfield in the dying minutes of the game.
It was Richard Clarke who would seal a worthy winner on 74 minutes when he controlled neatly and acted on instinct to deliver a 20 yard chip over Cullen's head and into the net. The Institute goalkeeper was left scrambling for ground but could only throw himself into the net along with the ball.
At 2-1 the win was on the cards and neither side continued to push for the remaining time.
Glentoran record another important win but now look ahead to Setanta Sports Cup action on Saturday as they travel to Dublin to face Bohemians.
